Montoya captains young Pumas squad for B&I Lions

SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT: Argentina head coach Felipe Contepomi has announced his squad of 32 players that will prepare to take on the British and Irish Lions at Lansdowne Road in Dublin next week.

Contepomi will be without a large number of his regular squad who are still competing in the Top 14 this season, but will have captain Julian Montoya available.

Montoya is playing in the Premiership Final on Saturday, just six days before the match in Dublin.

This Pumas squad has a homegrown look to it, with eleven members coming from their three Super Rugby Americas sides Tarucas, Dogos XV, and Pampas – Luciano Asevedo, Simón Benítez Cruz, and Nicolás Roger (Tarucas); Boris Wenger, Pedro Delgado, Leonel Oviedo, Agustín Moyano, and Faustino Sánchez Valarolo (Dogos XV); Joaquín Moro, Justo Piccardo, and Santiago Pernas (Pampas).

It will be the first time the British and Irish Lions will play on Irish soil, and will mark the beginning of their 2025 campaign.

The encounter kicks off the Pumas’ 2025 season, with two Tests against England to follow in July before a visit from Uruguay and the Rugby Championship.

“It’s an honour to have received the invitation from the British & Irish Lions to play their farewell match before the tour of Australia, which will be their first ever visit to Ireland,” Contepomi said.

“I know how prestigious it is for them to be part of this team, and being invited to this event fills us with pride.

“For us, it’s a great challenge to pick up where we left off in 2024 and continue our quest for continuous improvement. Every match is an opportunity to continue growing as a team, and we take it with great responsibility.”
