Pumas rope in Contepomi

By Online Editors
Tuesday 25 Jun 2013

Veteran back Felipe Contepomi has been included in a 30-man Pumas squad set to travel to the United States to prepare for the Rugby Championship.

Former captain Contepomi is one of nine players called up by Argentina head coach Santiago Phelan, the other being Gonzalo Tiesi, Mariano Galarza, Julio Farias Cabello, Benjamin Macome, Thomas Cubelli, Martin Landajo and Under-20 duo Matias Diaz and Paul Matera.

“The selection of these nine players was based on their performance in the June international window,” said Phelan, who added the trio of stalwarts called up will lend valuable experience to the squad.

“The returns of Felipe [Contepomi], Julio [Farias Cabello] and Gonza [Tiesi] are very good for the group. We're happy to have great players and people like them in the group.”

As part of their preparation for the Rugby Championship, which kicks off on August 17, the Pumas will play two friendlies against the Barbarians and New South Wales in August, with dates and venues to be confirmed.

Argentina squad: Horacio Agulla, Patricio Albacete, Ivan Marcos Ayerza, Marcelo Bosch, Oscar Gonzalo Camacho, Manuel Carizza, Felipe Contepomi, Agustín Creevy, Thomas Cubelli, Matías Díaz, July Farias Cabello, Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe, Santiago Fernández, Juan Figallo, Mariano Galarza, Lucas González Amorosino, Eusebio Guiñazú, Juan Martin Hernandez, Juan Jose Imhoff, Martin Landajo, Juan Manuel Leguizamón, Nahuel Lobo, Benjamin Macome, Paul Matera, Juan Pablo Orlandi, Martin Rodriguez, Federico Nicolás Sánchez, Vicente Leonardo Senatore, Gonzalo Tiesi, Joaquin Tuculet.
