Springboks reject Argentina 'warm-up' claim ahead of RGR

Suggestions that South Africa’s Test against Argentina is merely a dress rehearsal for next month’s blockbuster clashes with the All Blacks have been firmly rejected by Springbok assistant coach Deon Davids.

Rassie Erasmus has named a 44-man squad, with 18 players remaining in South Africa to continue preparations for the Test series against New Zealand, while Saturday’s clash in Buenos Aires is expected to provide valuable game time for a host of returning stars.

Captain Siya Kolisi, locks Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager, flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, No.9 Morne van den Berg and several others are set to make their comebacks after injury, leading to suggestions that Argentina has become a convenient stepping stone before Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry takes centre stage.

The contrast between the two nations’ schedules has only fuelled that perception. South Africa will play six Tests during this international window, allowing Erasmus to rotate his squad, build depth and carefully manage player workloads.

Argentina, by comparison, have only three fixtures, leaving Felipe Contepomi with fewer opportunities to develop combinations and match sharpness.

Los Pumas have also named a squad featuring 10 uncapped players, highlighting the different stages both teams find themselves in. While South Africa can afford to integrate returning veterans alongside established internationals, Argentina are simultaneously trying to build experience and continuity.

But Davids insists none of that changes the Springboks’ mindset.

“We’re very clear about what we want to achieve,” Davids said.

“We understand that coming to Argentina, and especially to Buenos Aires, has never been easy. While we’re building our game, it’s important that we improve in the areas where we want to improve, but it’s another Test match. Our aim will always be to be at our best and to play Test match rugby.”

Davids dismissed any suggestion that South Africa view the encounter as a warm-up.

“I don’t think we approach a game as a warm-up,” he said.

“We approach every Test match as a game that is important in terms of what we want to achieve as a country and what we stand for as a team. We’re proud of our standards and every game is an opportunity to improve those standards.”

The Springboks have won all three of their Nations Championship Tests against England, Scotland and Wales despite resting a significant group of experienced players. Now, Erasmus is expected to reintroduce many of those stars, but Davids stressed that selection is about building the squad while still winning every Test.

“We focus on ourselves,” he said. “Our main focus is to ensure we play the game we want to play, that we’re clear about what we want to achieve and that we play it in the right way against a formidable opponent.”

Davids also warned against underestimating Argentina, particularly on home soil.

“Argentina are very passionate, especially when they play in Buenos Aires. It has always been a place where you have to grind it out until the end. If you come to Argentina with the mentality that this is a warm-up, I think that’s a big mistake.”

He believes Los Pumas will be equally motivated despite their limited schedule.

“They want to win the game. They want to prove they belong on this stage and they also want to build depth with the brilliant youngsters coming through. It’s going to be a passionate Test match, a gutsy Test match and a really good challenge.”

Asked whether it was fair to describe Saturday’s encounter as the curtain-raiser to the All Blacks series, Davids was unequivocal.

“Our focus is Argentina. Our focus is this Test match. Our focus is to win another Test for South Africa, improve our game and continue building throughout the season. We’re not focusing on any other game. This week is all about Argentina.”

While the broader picture naturally includes New Zealand and the long road to the 2027 Rugby World Cup, Davids made it clear that, inside the Springbok camp, there is no such thing as a disposable Test. Buenos Aires is not a rehearsal. It is simply the next challenge.
