Whiteley gets Bok call up

Lions captain Warren Whitely has been called up to the Springbok squad with the No.8 set to link up with the National side after the Lions game against the Kings.

Whiteley was called up to the squad in the place of looseforward Willem Alberts and will join the Springboks after the Golden Lions’ game against the EP Kings.

GLRU CEO Rudolf Straeuli congratulated Whiteley and wished him well on behalf of his teammates and the GLRU management.

“We are delighted that Warren has been called up to the Springbok squad,” shares Straeuli.

“This is a great honour for the Union and we are happy that yet another Golden Lions player will have the opportunity to represent us at international level.

“Congratulations, Warren – your dedication, talent and leadership efforts have paid off.”

GLRU President Kevin de Klerk shared in these sentiments.

“We are all extremely proud of Warren as his Golden Lions family,” said De Klerk.

We have seen him grow over the past several years and mature into a great leader.

"While he will be sorely missed, we are completely behind him and wish him every success in his endeavours with the Springboks.”

Meanwhile, Marcell Coetzee has been called into the Springbok starting team in the place of the injured Willem Alberts for the Rugby Championship opener against Argentina in Pretoria.

Coetzee’s place on the replacements bench goes to Teboho Mohoje, who made his Springbok debut in June against Scotland in Port Elizabeth.

Alberts was forced to withdraw from the match-day squad after he picked up a hamstring strain during the captain’s run at Loftus Versfeld on Friday. He was given until Saturday to recuperate sufficiently, but the Springboks’ medical team decided he would not be fit enough to face Argentina this weekend.
