Canada blow Wallaroos away to set up semifinal spot
MATCH REPORT: Canada scored seven tries in a dominant 46-5 win over Australia in the quarterfinal of the World Cup at Ashton Gate on Saturday.
Canada will face New Zealand in the semifinals after Black Ferns beat South Africa 46-17 earlier on Saturday
Asia Hogan-Rochester opened the scoring inside the first minute, but the Wallaroos showed some fight as Desiree Miller flew down the left sideline to level the scores soon after. But Canada took control shortly after, piling on the points before the half-time break.
Alysha Corrigan scored a double to extend Canada’s lead, while Sophie de Goede and McKinley Hunt also crossed for a try each.
The Canadians took a 31-5 lead into the break, before Fabiola Forteza and Karen Paquin made their mark on the scoreboard during the second half.
It was an even start in Bristol as Canada’s Asia Hogan-Rochester and Australia’s Desiree Miller traded tries in the first ten minutes, but from then on, Canada put on a show for those in attendance as Alysha Corrigan (2), Sophie de Goede, and McKinley Hunt all crossed to give their side a 31-5 lead at the break.
The Wallaroos were able to stem the tide somewhat in the second half, but Fabiola Forteza and Karen Paquin both added tries, and Alex Tessier slotted a penalty to put the finishing touches on a statement performance in Bristol.
Player of the Match: Sophie de Goede after scoring a try and adding eight further points with her boot. She may have been the game’s top scorer with 13 points, but she was also happy to do the grunt work: her 78 metres made with ball in hand were the most out of any player on the pitch.
