McKenzie's Wallabies dream

Reds boss Ewen McKenzie has made no secret of his ambition to take over as Wallabies coach, and is now just waiting for the call from the ARU.

McKenzie will part ways with the Reds at the end of the current season, and has been tipped to take the reins at the Melbourne Rebels next year, but his ultimate goal is to take over from Wallabies coach Robbie Deans.

There has been much speculation about Deans' future in the job after the current British and Irish Lions series, with McKenzie and Brumbies coach Jake White the favourites to take over from the Kiwi.

McKenzie made no bones about his ambitions to take the job, and explained that it is now just a matter of timing, as he waits for Deans to get the boot.

He told the Sydney Morning Herald: "I've made it quite clear from back in February where my ambitions were [Wallabies]. Whether that happens or not is not in my hands.

"I've got my ambitions. There's ambition and there's reality. You've got to look at as many things as you can as you go along. It doesn't change where you want to end up. Timing is important in these matters. We'll see.

"They [the ARU] have their own agenda and timing. They don't function around what I'm doing. All I've done is make an early decision to give clarity to the Reds staff and playing group and organisation about where I'd be in 2014. That's allowed them to make some decisions early," he explained.

The World Cup-winning Wallabies prop has not ruled out a stint in Melbourne with the Rebels next year if the Wallabies job is not offered to him by then, and added that he has had other offers from overseas as well.

"So far I've been coaching Ireland, Scotland, the Rebels. The Rebels I think are looking at their situation. But that's all I know.

"I've had interesting approaches from all around the world. I'll keep considering things but my main focus is trying to take the Reds as far as we can in this competition," he said.
