The 49-year-old guided Australia to the World Cup Final in his first full year in charge and has created a competitive team Phipps: In Cheika we trustculture within in the Australian camp.

Places in the Wallabies' starting XV is not cemented and the same goes for Phipps, who is the frontrunner to wear the No.9 jersey in the three-Test series against England.

"Every year there's something going on," Phipps told the Canberra Times. "And that's good for me. Even when you think you are playing well, things happen.

"It's just important for me to stay focused and the selection decisions will come. We've got two blokes here keen for a crack and there is always competition for spots.

"The way our style is; I think it's easy to pick up for players coming into the side. Everyone is in no doubt there will be a few shocks. But in Cheik [Cheika] we trust.

"He sees potential in players and draws the best out of them. There's a method behind what is going on and he's always happy to give guys an opportunity to show what they're worth."

Phipps believes that he and the rest of the players in the squad are getting more accustomed to Cheika's culture.

"At least we know what to expect now, as much as you can with the great man Cheik," Phipps said. "I think everyone knows the standards and who we are, really, the identity of the team.

"Once you know that, you can really start to build that culture. New people, new faces, they come in and know what is expected of them and the standards."
