Player ratings: Outclassed
The Wallabies arrived at Eden Park in Auckland with hope and desire. They left the stadium a demoralised bunch.
They were taught a harsh lesson by a class team and in the end the 51-20 scoreline flattered the Australians somewhat.
The value of the game should not be read just in the final scoreline – although it does have significance – but more in what happened when the game was still in the meting pot.
The key was when the two teams were each a man down, in quick succession, in the first half.
The score was 3-all (one penalty each) in the period that the All Blacks were a man down, but they scored two tries (14-0) while the Wallabies were a man down.
After that it was effectively over as a contest, even though the Wallabies launched a late rally. The All Blacks again showed they are past masters of knocking the stuffing out of an opponent showing just the least bit of vulnerability.
And the Wallabies were very, very vulnerable.
Jan de Koning rates the Australian players!
15 Israel Folau:
Showed his great attacking ability, making 150 metres in his 10 runs, but his option-taking still leaves a lot to be desired.
6/10
14 Pat McCabe:
At times worked hard off the ball and had the occasional run, but was reduced mostly to a defensive role – although he could not be faulted in that regard – a few poor options as well.
5/10
13 Adam Ashley-Cooper:
Very ordinary day at the office – well below his usual standards.
5/10
12 Matt Toomua:
He may have made a few errors, including a couple of penalties, but showed some neat touches with ball in hand – made plenty of tackles.
6/10
11 Rob Horne:
When a player misses as many tackles as he makes, you know he is not having a good game. That was his first half. After the break it improved a bit.
5/10
10 Kurtley Beale:
His attacking skills does not make up for his defensive frailties – the All Blacks knew that and kept attacking his line, often finding holes. He missed 42 percent of his tackles.
4/10
9 Nic White:
Got caught out and penalised on defence and was lucky not to be carded for cynical play at a scrum near his line. Should have been replaced in the first half already, as he was JUST A LIABILITY.
3/10
8 Wycliff Palu:
Unfortunately a bit limited – very strong and makes heaps of tackles, but does not provide enough in terms of the skill the opposition had at No.8
5/10
7 Michael Hooper (captain):
Gave new meaning to the term 'putting his body on the line' – saved his team from peril on more than one occasion and scored an amazing individual try. One of the few Wallabies that matched the All Blacks for desire and intensity.
8/10
6 Scott Fardy:
Worked hard on defence, but conceded some unnecessary penalties and didn't bring much value.
5/10
5 Rob Simmons:
Conceded a silly penalty that put his team under pressure early in the match and then got yellow-carded for lifting an opponent's leg in a maul. Made plenty of tackled and won his line-outs.
5/10
4 Sam Carter:
Penalised for playing a man off the ball, missed a few tackle and his only real value was in the line-outs.
5/10
3 Sekope Kepu:
Worked hard on defence, but the rest of his game left a lot to be desired.
5/10
2 Nathan Charles:
Such a brave player and wins some sympathy points, while his defensive work is also to be admired. But remains a limited player when the opposition turns up the heat.
6/10
1 James Slipper:
Conceded a penalty try when he collapsed a scrum close to his line, although in his defence the Wallaby scrum was a man don at the time. Had a couple of decent carries an made a handful of tackles.
5/10
Replacements:
16 James Hanson (on for Charles, 31st min):
He worked very hard on defence and did not slip any tackles.
6/10
17 Pek Cowan:
Not used.
18 Ben Alexander (on for Kepu, 64th min):
Made no impact or contribution of any note whatsoever.
4/10
19 Will Skelton (on for Fardy, 64th min):
One tackle, one line-out win and a couple of half-hearted carries.
4/10
20 Scott Higginbotham (on for Palu, 55th min):
Carried strongly on occasion, but very little else in terms of a contribution.
5/10
21 Nick Phipps (on for White, 51st min):
His service was far superior to that of White and he asked a few questions.
6/10
22 Bernard Foley (on for Toomua, 55th min):
Had a few decent runs, but also missed a couple of tackles.
5/10
23 Tevita Kuridrani (on for McCabe, 62nd min):
Reduced to a defensive role.
