Try-ing times for Wallabies

Australia will continue to look for try-scoring opportunities, but using the boot to win matches is becoming an increasingly more prominent option.

The debate between going for tries, kicking penalties and taking drop-goals late in matches was given added impetus  in the wake of the weekend's 12-all draw between the Wallabies and All Blacks in the opening Rugby Championship match in Sydney at the weekend.

It was foisted into the spotlight after the Wallabies failed to set up a drop-goal opportunity for replacement flyhalf Bernard Foley in the dying minutes – when the game was theirs for the taking.

The Aussie kept the ball through a few phases, before they lost possession when they themselves were penalised at the next breakdown.

It robbed them of rare chance to beat the All Blacks, something they last achieved in 2011.

Wallaby wing Rob Horne denied that they deliberately spurned the drop-goal.

"I know, heading into that last scrum, Bernard [Foley] was talking to us about setting it up, so it definitely in the minds of the guys," he told reporters.

"We're trying to win games, we're not trying to make any philosophical statements.

"Of course we want to score tries, but if it came down to that, then it comes down to that.

"It's not the first thing we want to go to, that's not how we play, but as a last minute option, certainly."

Meanwhile Wallaby coach Ewen McKenzie has offered no clues to possible team changes for Saturday's return clash in Auckland and whether he could bring in Bernard Foley for Kurtley Beale at flyhalf.

Centre Matt Toomua and scrumhalf Nic White had knocks, while No.8 Wycliff Palu suffered a head knock, but all are expected to be available.
