Wallabies rocked by four-Test suspension
NEWS: Australia midfielder Hunter Paisami has been handed a four-Test suspension following a dangerous tackle during the closing stages of the Wallabies’ chaotic win over South Africa in Perth last Sunday.
Paisami received a six-match sanction, which was reduced by two matches after the disciplinary committee considered his acceptance of foul play, recent disciplinary record, conduct and remorse.
The 28-year-old will therefore miss Australia’s trip to Auckland next week to face the All Blacks, dealing another blow to Les Kiss’ midfield options ahead of the Bledisloe Cup series.
Paisami was one of Australia’s standout performers against the Springboks, forming an impressive midfield partnership with Reds teammate Len Ikitau, who is also an injury concern.
Kiss will now have to reshuffle his midfield, with Reds midfielder Isaac Henry among the options available to replace Paisami.
Jordan Petaia could also return to the Wallabies squad, with his comeback potentially coming as soon as Saturday, October 10, at Eden Park. Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii or Filipo Daugunu could also be considered in midfield, although Suaalii’s impressive return to the wing against the Springboks will give Kiss another option.
The disciplinary committee found Paisami guilty of dangerous play relating to a contrary tackle, in breach of Law 9.13.
“The Committee determined that the act of foul play merited a mid-range entry point of six weeks/matches.
“In light of Paisami accepting that he committed an act of foul play, as well as mitigating factors such as his recent disciplinary record, conduct, and remorse, the Committee applied a two week/match reduction on the sanction.”
Paisami’s suspension means Australia will have to find a new midfield combination as they prepare for a crucial stretch of Tests
