Wallaby Vaughan Dies
A New South Welshman by birth, Vaughan spent most of his life in Victoria, a noted academic in the field of pharmacy, for which he received an Order Of Australia in 2006.
He had played rugby at Homebush Boys' High School in Sydney and then club rugby in Sydney before heading down to Melbourne to complete a doctorate of philosophy. He continued to play rugby in Melbourne and then, playing for Melbourne University, he was chosen to tour with the 1957-58 Wallabies, a feat for a Victorian. On the tour to the UK, Ireland, France, the USA and Ireland, he played loosehead against England, Scotland and France.
Then after the tour he was the Wallaby vice-captain in three Tests against the Maori. Of the six Tests he played in, one was won, one drawn and four lost.
After his playing days, Vaughan stayed involved in rugby football both at the university club and on the Victorian board.
In 31 years as an academic, he was Dean and Director of the Victorian College of Pharmacy, the Director of the Chisholm Institute of Technology, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Monash University.
Geoffrey Norman Vaughan was born in Sydney on 9 April 1933. He died on 4 January 2018.
