VIDEO: Why Boks 'need' the six-two bench split
SPOTLIGHT: Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus is expecting more of “grind” than an expansive display in this weekend’s clash against the Wallabies in Cape Town.
Erasmus admitted that his team fell into the trap of trying to run their opponents ragged in Johannesburg last weekend, which eventually led to a defeat.
The Bok boss has now opted for a six-two split between forwards and backs on the bench for the rematch in Cape Town in a bid to overpower the Wallabies in the tight exchanges.
The story continues below…
“We feel we need that in this game,” said Erasmus.
“At altitude, we thought running all over would tire their legs, and we got that totally wrong.
“Maybe we outsmarted ourselves, but they really played clever.”
There will also be a chance of rain on Saturday, and that has also played a role in Erasmus’ decision to go for that split on the bench.
“With the six-two, it will probably be more of a grind than a running game,” Erasmus added.
“I think the weather will not allow us to run around.
“We were running and not really being effective last Saturday.”
