Borthwick bolsters England coaching team ahead of Bok showdown
NEWS: England head coach Steve Borthwick will have an “excellent addition” to his coaching team as they prepare for the Nations Championship in July.
On Tuesday, England Rugby announced that Byron McGuigan will join Borthwick’s team on a full-time basis in June.
The former Scotland international initially joined the England set-up ahead of the tour to Argentina and the United States in 2025, splitting his time between the national side and his club, Sale Sharks.
McGuigan will now join the England management team full-time, with a focus on collision skills, the aerial contest, and working with the back three.
“Byron is an excellent addition to our coaching group,” said Borthwick.
“Since arriving with us last summer, he has made a strong impact through his detailed understanding of the game and the energy he brings.
“His work in supporting the development of our back-three players has already been valuable, and he has also invested a huge amount of time into individual player development across the squad. We’re excited about the contribution he will continue to make.”
McGuigan made more than 100 appearances for Sale Sharks and earned 10 caps for Scotland before retiring to pursue a coaching career.
While still playing, he gained experience with grassroots clubs including Sandbach RFC, Bowdon RFC, and Rossendale RFC, and led Sale Sharks during the 2023/24 Premiership Rugby Cup campaign. In November 2024, he was appointed defence coach at Sale Sharks.
“It’s a huge honour to be part of the England set-up,” added McGuigan.
“Since coming into the environment last summer, I’ve been really impressed by the players’ appetite to learn and improve.
“I’m excited to continue supporting the group and helping the players develop as we keep pushing standards forward.”
England begin their Nations Championship campaign against South Africa in Johannesburg on Saturday, July 4, followed by matches against Fiji and Argentina.
