Kolbe magic: Step by step
VIDEO AND PICTURE ANALYSIS: Cheslin Kolbe put the seal on South Africa’s famous 32-12 World Cup win over England in Yokohama at the weekend.
England went into the Final as favourites.
South Africa emerged as commanding and deserved winners.
The Springboks’ victory was built on a colossal display by their powerhouse pack that allowed flyhalf Handre Pollard to kick six penalties, before Makazole Mapimpi’s 66th-minute try – the first the Springboks had scored in a World Cup final – and another from fit-again fellow flyer Kolbe put the result beyond doubt.
The result meant South Africa equalled New Zealand’s three World Cup triumphs. They won it in 1995, 12 years later in 2007, and 12 years later once more in 2019.
England failed to score a try for the first time at the 2019 tournament, while the 20-point victory margin was the biggest since 1999 – when Australia beat France 35-12.
The win also saw South Africa become the first team to win a World Cup having lost in pool play, with the Springboks beaten by New Zealand in their Japan 2019 opener.
However, it was the Kolbe try in the 75th minute that deserves special attention.
Tinus le Roux takes us through the Kolbe special, step-by-step.

2.Look inside to sum up the pace and potential pace of each individual defender.
Establish that there are essentially two you need to beat. pic.twitter.com/dKctYfSOWS— Tinus le Roux (@tinusleroux) November 2, 2019
4. Once the 1st defender is set you need to set the 2nd one, but there is only 1 way to do this: Accelerate towards touch with the 3 meters at your disposal and make him believe you’re going on the outside.
You must make him believe, so your body weight and hips NEED to sell it. pic.twitter.com/KRLhsVyvyw— Tinus le Roux (@tinusleroux) November 2, 2019
6. Break the tackle of the much bigger defender.
While you do that, scan the inside to establish the next threat. pic.twitter.com/BSPR1EEOzC— Tinus le Roux (@tinusleroux) November 2, 2019
