'May day', but no distress for England
Try scorer Jonny May played down his own fantastic finish to praise the way his team's back three had dealt with the aerial threat of Ireland.
The Gloucester wing put in a stellar performance, scoring one try and having one disallowed for a forward pass.
On his try, where he bumped off the attentions of Tommy Bowe, he said: "You’ve got to put it behind you quickly and I was more pleased from an aerial perspective. It was outstanding."
May, who was voted man of the match by fans, said the team was pleased with the reaction following a disappointing loss to France two weeks ago.
“We wanted to play and get the crowd behind us early doors and put everything right," May said.
Mike Brown, who put in a solid performance under the high ball said: "I thought the forwards were outstanding – we stopped their mauls and their forward dominance."
Englands' dominance in the air was best illustrated when George Ford kicked an exquisite chip behind the Ireland backline – Anthony Watson leaped above Simon Zebo to snatch the ball out of his grasp and score the try.
Watson said: "To get a victory here and keep that unbeaten run at Twickenham was important."
All eyes will now turn to next Friday, September 18, when England kick off the World Cup event against Fiji at Twickenham.
After the Ireland match May said: "I guess it gives us loads of confidence but I think we could have won by more if a couple of things had gone a bit better.
"We’ll take the learning from that game and strive to be better.
"I’m happy with the way I am playing, but I just got to keep working hard and improving."
