Player ratings: No cigar

England have fallen just short to another Southern Hemisphere giant as they succumbed 28-31 to the Springboks at Twickenham on Saturday.

England were under the pump at the beginning of the game with an early intercept try from Serfontein, but they fought well to make it an enthralling game.

The Red Roses made the best of a yellow card that was dished out to Victor Matfield as they managed to score two tries and level up the game.

However, again there was a shift of momentum when Burger managed to barge over for a try in the second half.

The English were left to chase the game right to the end when a Brad Barritt try put them within three points.

In the end, the Boks were able to hold on for a victory, and almost a late try, against the English to extend their winning record.

We rate the Red Roses!

15 Mike Brown:

Was exceptional at taking the ball out of the air and attacking from those high bombs – definitely England's best attacking spark.

9/10

14 Anthony Watson:

Was put under a lot of pressure and got bossed around by the opposition, did not have any chance to shine in his run-on debut.

4/10

13 Brad Barritt:

Direct in his running and did a lot of the donkey work for a backline player – got a deserved try.

7/10

12 Kyle Eastmond:

A slippery customer in midfield, showed his rugby league skills while beating defenders with some ease.

7/10

11 Jonny May:

Probably the most active wing in the game but again, did not have much to do and could not set the field a light like last week.

5/10

10 Owen Farrell:

His decision making was poor and his kicking let him down – really had a day to forget.

2/10

9 Danny Care:

Came back well after a few critical mistakes and looked lively – did cost his team seven points though.

5/10

8 Billy Vunipola:

A tough customer, broke a number of tackles and was the only really strike runner, but his hands were very buttery.

7/10

7 Chris Robshaw (captain):

A solid game from the captain, made his tackles and was a claming presence.

7/10

6 Tom Wood:

You would expect more from this usual work-horse, left the defensive duties to his team mates but was a reliable line-out option.

5/10

5 Courtney Lawes:

Happy to add to the tackle count with some big hits and some hard work but was penalised often.

6/10

4 Dave Attwood:

A good run or two, but was relatively quiet through out.

5/10

3 David Wilson:

Was more than useful in the scrum and even got a try!

6/10

2 Dylan Hartley:

Was a good asset at the breakdown and was a huge contributor to the tackle count but his Yellow Card was a cost.

5/10

1 Joe Marler:

looked to carry often but did not make the metres he would have liked.

5/10

Replacements:

16 Rob Webber: (on for Hartley, 71 mins)

Not enough time to be rated.

17 Matt Mullan: (on for Marler, 67 mins)

Not enough time to be rated.

18 Kieran Brookes: (on for Wilson, 73 mins)

Not enough time to be rated.

19 George Kruis: (on for Attwood, 67 mins)

Not enough time to be rated.

20 Ben Morgan: (on for Vunipola, 43 mins)

Made a big impact when he came on, he coincided with Matfield's Yellow Card and added another gear.

8/10

21 Ben Youngs: (on for Care, 64 mins)

Kept the game running smoothly but did nothing spectacular.

5/10

22 George Ford: (on for Farrell, 64 mins)

Was a good change and added a bit of direction.

6/10

23 Marland Yarde:

Not used.
