Player ratings: Not enough puff
England produced and impressive first half, but then ran out of puff as New Zealand squeezed them out of the game.
The final scoreline at Twickenham may say 24-21 and England's late rally must be applauded, but once the All Blacks got their noises in front they were never going to lose this game.
There were a number of stand-out players for the home team and they will be able to take some positives from their display.
But in the final analyses they were just not good enough.
Jan de Koning rates the England players!
15 Mike Brown:
Put the ball down cold with an open tryline inside the opening quarter, missed too many tackles and made very little ground with ball in hand.
4/10
14 Semesa Rokoduguni:
His lack of experience showed, his workrate was poor and was caught out on defence on occasion.
5/10
13 Brad Barritt:
His defensive work is well-documented, but is now approaching legendary status. Missed a couple of tackles, but overall had a satisfactory display.
6/10
12 Kyle Eastmond:
His combination with Barritt on defence gave New Zealand's famed midfielders little room.
7/10
11 Jonny May:
Scored the opening try after leaving Israel Dagg for dead right up against the touchline and kept troubling the All Black defence.
7/10
10 Owen Farrell:
His first kick was a shocker and from there it got only worse – missed a number of crucial tackles.
4/10
9 Danny Care:
He may ask plenty of questions around the fringes and his service is good, but he still tends to miss too many tackles.
5/10
8 Billy Vunipola:
Big and strong, but also slow and predictable. His best work is on defence.
6/10
7 Chris Robshaw (captain):
While his best work was done on defence, it is the example that he sets with his workrate that is so valuable to the English players. His dropped pass right at the end was a rare error in an otherwise great day at the office.
7/10
6 Tom Wood:
While his tackle count is always worth mentioning and his value as a line-out forward underestimated, he does tend to concede the occasional penalty.
7/10
5 Courtney Lawes:
Added very little value in the 20 minutes on the field, before being forced off after a head knock.
5/10
4 Dave Attwood:
An invaluable source of line-out possession, a rock on defence and made a few impressive charges with the ball in hand. Also a crucial line-out steal late in the second half.
8/10
3 David Wilson:
His scrumming power is to be applauded, but on defence his workrate is letting him down.
5/10
2 Dylan Hartley:
Worked hard on defence, but got caught out a few times trying to push the envelope.
6/10
1 Joe Marler:
Did the basics well, but was good without being spectacular.
5/10
Replacements:
16 Rob Webber (on for Hartley, 73rd min):
Not enough time to be rated.
17 Kieran Brookes (on for Wilson, 73rd min):
Not enough time to be rated.
19 George Kruis (on for Kruis, 22nd min):
Was one revelation and may well be a regular started down the years.
7/10
20 Ben Morgan (on for Vunipola, 52nd min):
Tackled hard, but made no real contribution other than defence.
6/10
21 Ben Youngs (on for Care, 61st min):
Made no impact and was no more than a link.
5/10
22 George Ford (on for Eastmond, 64th min):
Was little more than a spectator.
4/10
23 Anthony Watson (on for Rokoduguni, 61st min) :
He is not going to secure a regular starting spot if he doesn't make a bigger impact.
5/10
