Player ratings: Strike power from the bench
The bonus-point try only came in the dying seconds and only a handful of players enhanced their reputations.
It was mostly from the bench where the strike power came and coach Stuart Lancaster will have been left with more questions than answers.
Jan de Koning rates the England players!
15 Mike Brown:
Looked dangerous with ball in hand and made plenty of metres. Was England's biggest attacking threat by far.
8/10
14 Anthony Watson:
Didn't have as many opportunities as he would have liked, but had a few decent runs.
6/10
13 Jonathan Joseph:
His hands let him down, seemed rattled by the physicality of the Fijian defence and conceded a number of turnovers.
5/10
12 Brad Barritt:
A very ordinary day at the office, which included penalties, turnovers conceded and forward passes. He should have been replaced earlier.
5/10
11 Jonny May:
Was a constant threat on attack, beating defenders almost at will in the first half. However, had a very quiet second half.
6/10
10 George Ford:
Kicked an early penalty and almost immediately produced a knock-on. It was generally a mixed bag.
6/10
9 Ben Youngs:
Did the basics well, but nothing to write home about.
5/10
8 Ben Morgan:
Forgettable day at the office. Could not impose himself on the game.
5/10
7 Chris Robshaw (captain):
Not his best game ever, but worked hard – especially on defence, where he was his team’s most productive player.
7/10
6 Tom Wood:
His workrate was below his previous high standards and conceded a couple of penalties – including one for foul play, when he grappled an opponent around the neck.
5/10
5 Courtney Lawes:
Produced a number of impressive bursts of energy. May have gone quiet at times, but was one of his team's more impressive forwards.
7/10
4 Geoff Parling:
If you didn't look at the team sheet you may not have noticed he was on the field.
5/10
3 Dan Cole:
His scrum power was key to England at crucial stages, but was penalised at other times – both in the scrums and at the breakdown. His defence was not bad either.
6/10
2 Tom Youngs:
His best work was on defence, but he tended to drift in and out of the game.
6/10
1 Joe Marler:
Did the basics well, but had a very ordinary day at the office.
5/10
Replacements:
16 Rob Webber (on for T Youngs, 73rd min):
Not enough time to be rated.
17 Mako Vunipola (on for Marler, 51st min):
The England scrum was totally dominant after he came on and did not shirk his work in open play either.
7/10
18 Kieran Brookes (on for Cole, 68th min):
Not enough time to be rated.
19 Joe Launchbury (on for Parling, 51st min):
Crucial tackle on Nadolo midway through the second half and generally brought more energy to the game.
20 Billy Vunipola (on for Morgan, 52nd min):
Added a real physical edge to the England game and helped them to overpower a tiring Fijian pack.
7/10
21 Richard Wigglesworth (on for B Youngs, 52nd min):
His snappy service provided the England backs with those crucial extra seconds they needed.
6/10
22 Owen Farrell (on for Ford, 62nd min):
Gave the England backline some real direction and caused the Fijians some real problems.
7/10
23 Sam Burgess (on for Barritt, 62nd min):
Looked to inject himself into the game and had a couple of decent runs.
6/10
