Some Six Nations statistics, Round 4

The weather in Europe was terrible and the Six Nations rugby did little to lift the gloom, not even in sunny Dublin. The drier the match, the fewer the stoppages; the wetter, the more – as the staistics show.

We gave some statistics from the matches. We shall later discuss some law matters from the matches.

We shall do the same for the seven Super 14 matches.

Sanctions

Both yellow cards this weekend went to Wales – both for nastiness. Mike Phillips, who seems to have a nasty streak, dropped a knee on an opponent and hurt him. Martyn Williams tripped an opponent. Phil Vickery was cited and suspended for this at the World Cup. Williams was not cited. It’s hard to spot the difference.

Yellow cards so far:

Santiago Dellapè (Italy) – punching
Simon Easterby (Ireland) – tackle infringement, his fourth in the match
Nathan Hines (Scotland) – striking an opponent
Mirco Bergamasco (Italy) – tackle infringement
Mike Phillips (Wales) – kneeing an opponent
Martyn Williams (Wales) – tripping

Citing and Suspension:

Mauro Bergamasco (Italy) – 13 weeks for eye gouging
