Why Manie starts ahead of Pollard against England
SPOTLIGHT: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus insists Manie Libbok is the ideal flyhalf to unlock England this weekend, while stressing that Handré Pollard remains firmly in South Africa’s plans despite missing out on the starting XV.
Libbok has been entrusted with the No.10 jersey for Saturday’s Nations Championship opener at Ellis Park, with Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s injury, while Pollard only recently rejoined the Springbok camp following the Bulls’ United Rugby Championship final.
For Erasmus, the selection is about matching the player to the occasion rather than signalling a change in the flyhalf pecking order.
“If the game really opens up, which I think England will try and do, I think Manie is the right guy for that,” Erasmus explained after naming his team.

The Bok coach believes Ellis Park presents the perfect stage for Libbok’s attacking instincts.
“Ellis Park is always a fast game. The ball travels further at altitude, box kicks go higher, and even though both teams are adapted to the conditions, you still tire more quickly. That’s why how you use your replacements becomes so important.
“We all know how Manie plays, so hopefully when it’s on, he does exploit it,” Erasmus said.
“Obviously, we want to play a game that we control. I’m pretty sure England are going to make it tough for us, but it’s a selection that we think is fit for this game.”
Libbok’s inclusion also reflects the limited preparation time Pollard has had with the squad.
While the Bulls flyhalf was still involved in the URC final in Dublin, Libbok was able to spend an extra week training with the Springboks after returning from his stint in Japan.
“We had one week more to prepare with Manie while Handré was playing with the Bulls in the final,” Erasmus said.
The Bok coach was equally quick to dismiss any suggestion that Pollard has slipped down the pecking order.
“The back-up flyhalf will be Damien Willemse, who plays fullback. Handré will probably get a run with one of the other two nines we’ll probably play in the next game.”
Erasmus also explained why Quan Horn featured at flyhalf against the Barbarians.
“Sacha is currently injured, while Quan played flyhalf against the Barbarians because Manie needed another week off after returning from Japan.”
