Another Springbok to lead Toulon

Toulon is well known for their influx of foreign players and it is not the first time a Springbok will  captain the side.

Juan Smith, a 2007 World Cup winner, shared the Toulon captaincy with Jocelino Suta last year.

Smith took over the leadership from All Black Carl Hayman, who retired at the end of the 2014/2015 campaign.

The French outfit confirmed the news on club's social networks.

The 30-year-old Vermeulen, who made his international debut for South Africa against Australia in 2012, has played in 37 Tests and scored two tries for the Boks.

Toulon could be without Vermeulen's services for the opening weeks of the season if he is called up by the Springboks for the Rugby Championship that gets underway later this month.

In June, the Bok forward was ruled out of the deciding third Test against Ireland because of an elbow injury.

Vermeulen sustained the injury in the first half of the second Test against Ireland in Johannesburg.

Vermeulen was a strong candidate to become the next Bok skipper, but ultimately it was decided that the national captain should be based in South Africa.
