Carter in drink-driving drama

French magazine Closer reported that the two-time World Cup winner was stopped by police while allegedly driving near the Champs-Elysees – in central Paris – with his blood alcohol count being with almost twice the legal level.

Leading French newspaper L'Equipe also claim to have confirmed the incident occurred.

Carter has faced a difficult few months after being part of a doping inquiry into last year's French Top 14 final.

The 34-year-old was allegedly found without his driver's licence and had a blood-alcohol count of 0.98 g per litre. The limit is 0.5g/l.

Carter's manager Dean Hegan said he "wasn't aware" of Carter being stopped for drink-driving when contacted by the New Zealand Herald.

According to French media, Carter was not held in custody or put in a sobering cell, but his car was impounded.

Carter will be summoned to appear in court, the report said.

The All Black legend is in the second season of a stint at Paris club Racing 92.

The 34-year-old shifted to France following the 2015 World Cup, at which he played a starring role in the All Blacks' win over the Wallabies, and ended his record-breaking career at 112 Tests.
