Heart attack ends France star's career
NEWS: La Rochelle have confirmed that France prop Uini Atonio’s career has come to an end following a heart attack.
The New Zealand-born prop, 35, withdrew from last weekend’s match against Clermont. initially believed to be suffering from a chest issue.
On Tuesday, La Rochelle revealed that Atonio was admitted to the La Rochelle Hospital Center after a suspected heart problem. Medical examinations later confirmed that he had suffered a heart attack.
While his condition is stable, Atonio remains in intensive care under close supervision.
The club has confirmed that the setback will bring an end to his playing career.
“At the end of his hospitalisation, Uini will need to undergo a long period of convalescence,” La Rochelle said in a statement. “It is now certain that he will not be able to continue his playing career.”
“Uini holds a special place in the history and heart of our club. This news deeply affects us. The entire club wishes to extend its full and unwavering support to him and his family during this difficult time.”
He returned to action in December after spending six months sidelined with a hamstring injury.
The 35-year-old had been a pivotal figure for France, under coach Fabien Galthie, winning two Six Nations titles, including the Grand Slam in 2022.
He was still part of Galthie’s plans, having been named in his initial squad last week for the upcoming defence of their Six Nations crown.
Atonio was capped 68 times by France and won two Champions Cup trophies with his club.
Sadly, this is not the first time a heart issue has stolen a player’s career in France.
Last year, French prop Hassane Kolingar suffered a cardiac arrest after taking snus – lifting the lid on his terrifying ordeal after using the tobacco product.
In 2022, France midfielder Virimi Vakatawa retired with immediate effect at the age of 30 after cardiac issues.
At the time, Vakatawa stated he didn’t feel any symptoms or anything.
