Italy's Varney swaps Gloucester for French club

NEWS: Gloucester announced that scrumhalf Stephen Varney will leave the club with immediate effect.

Varney is set to pursue an opportunity with French Top14 club Vannes.

The scrumhalf, who was born in Wales but qualifies for the Azzurri through his mother, came through the ranks at Kingsholm and went on to become a regular in the first team.

However, the 23-year-old’s recent opportunities had been limited after the Cherry and Whites signed Wales scrumhalf Tomos Williams midway through last season.

Head coach George Skivington said the club is fortunate to have an abundance of good scrumhalves.

“Tomos is one of the best scrumhalves in the game, and he’s shown that in his first few appearances here. We’ve also got Caolan Englefield and Charlie Chapman here who we see a lot of potential in.

“Steve is someone I invested a lot of time and trust in when I came in, and he’s developed into a fantastic player for Club and country. It’s understandable why he wants to move and get some more regular game time.

“I’m really thankful for Steve’s contributions in Cherry & White but ultimately this move makes complete sense for all concerned.”

Varney added: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at Kingsholm. There’s a great group of lads here and they’re doing some exciting stuff.

“I’d like to thank Skivs and the coaches for giving me my first shot at professional rugby, I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity I was given here,

“Finally, I’d like to thank the Gloucester fans who have supported me and the team through my time here. They’re a special group of fans and they deserve the good times that I hope are coming.

“Whilst I’m sad to be leaving Gloucester, it’s a great opportunity for myself personally and I’m really excited for the next chapter.”
