Mjekevu’s future is in France

Former Baby Bok wing Wandile Mjekevu has ruled out a return to South Africa and hopes to play Test rugby for France.

Mjekevu burst on to the scene as a teenager in 2010, scoring a hat-trick for the Lions in a Super Rugby clash against the Chiefs.

Physically gifted at 1.90m and 94kg, he was considered a future Springbok but fell out of favour when he joined the Sharks in 2012.

Relegated to club rugby in Durban earlier this year, Mjekevu was plucked from obscurity by Perpignan and has revived his career at the French club, recently scoring a European Cup double against Edinburgh.

Mjekevu, now 22, says he has new goals, none of which involve pursuing a green and gold jersey.   

"One day I'd like to play for France, but my current focus is with Perpignan,” he told Die Burger.

“I've set myself new goals and want to play for Perpignan on a regular basis and see my long-term future here.

"There are negotiations to extend my contract here to two years. South Africa is not an option. I've met a girl here and I love the life in France."
