France get extra hand ahead of Ireland showdown

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: France have enlisted the help of a legendary figure as they prepare for the crunch Six Nations clash against Ireland on Saturday.

The French side was paid a visit by none other than football legend Thierry Henry.

The Arsenal legend and World Cup winner addressed the squad on Sunday as they prepare for a potentially title-deciding showdown against Ireland in Dublin—a fixture that has become the defining rivalry of the Championship in the past few years

Henry’s visit follows a line of guest speakers – including MMA fighter Benoît Saint-Denis and actor Jean Dujardin – designed to provide fresh perspectives and break the intensity of tournament life.

But his presence ahead of this match carries extra weight as he played a huge role in denying the Republic of Ireland a place at the 2010 World Cup.

In 2009 his handball went unnoticed by the officials in the lead-up to William Gallas’ goal.

The defender’s equaliser in the second leg of the play-off tie ensured that France progressed to the tournament in South Africa at their opponents’ expense.

The moment sparked outrage across the Channel and left a lasting scar on Franco-Irish sporting relations.

Henry was presented with a signed shirt after the visit.

Fast forward to rugby, and France versus Ireland has become the ultimate Championship heavyweight clash. The two nations have dominated the tournament in recent years. With both teams eyeing the 2025 title, and unbeaten Ireland carrying an edge.
