Premiership record try-scorer heads to France
TRANSFER NEWS: England flyer Tom Varndell has signed for France’s second-tier club Soyaux Angoulême XV Charente.
The Premiership record try-scorer has joined the ProD2 side on a two-year deal.
While some might be surprised that a larger club haven’t signed the proven try scorer, the budgets that many ProD2 sides can boast are well in excess of those available in other top-tier leagues.
Varndell most recently enjoyed a stint at Pro14 side Scarlets, after several years at the Bristol Bears.
The 32-year-old is the Premiership’s all-time record try scorer with 92. During his three-year stay at Bristol, Varndell chalked up 50 appearances and scored 35 tries.
His two previous clubs are Leicester Tigers and Wasps. He won the last of his four England caps against New Zealand in 2008.
