South African lock hangs up his boots
NEWS: Racing 92’s South African-born lock Bernard Le Roux has hung up his boots after 21 months out with injury.
The 35-year-old joined Racing in 2009 and went on to play 47 times for France after qualifying for his adopted country through residency.
Le Roux made his international debut in a 0-30 loss to New Zealand in 2013 and ran out for France a last time in a 23-27 Six Nations loss to Scotland in 2021.
He played in the 2015 and 2019 World Cups, and with Racing made the Champions Cup Final on three occasions (2016, 2018, 2020) as well as winning the Top 14 in 2016.
“Truly grateful for the past 15 years. Rugby gave me more than I could have ever imagined,” Le Roux wrote in an Instagram post.
“A special thanks to my family for all their support throughout the years, for everything they have sacrificed for me to be able to live my dream. Couldn’t thank you enough.
“To the coaches, staff & medical teams I had the privilege of working with. Thank you for your countless contributions towards my career.”
Le Roux has not played since receiving a head knock against Lyon in September 2022.
The South African has since worked as a coach in the Paris club’s academy set-up.
