Spedding heading to Clermont

South African born French international Scott Spedding will leave Bayonne at the end of the Top 14 season to join Clermont Auvergne.

 

The fullback will move to the Top 14 leaders when the current campaign ends in June having agreed a three-year deal at the Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin. 

 

Clermont coach Frank Azema is delighted with the deal to sign the 28-year-old, and expects him to continue improving when he joins them next season. 

 

"Scott knows our league well, and we know that he is the type of guy who gives his all and integrates well," Azema said.

 

"We are convinced that he will make further progress at Clermont Auvergne. 

 

"He has other qualities too, very strong points such as the length of his kicking game, defence, where his ability to break the first tackle with his power.

 

"We are very happy he has made the decision to join us."

 

Spedding moved to Bayonne in 2012 after making his debut in French rugby in 2008 with Brive. 

 

Although the Aquitaine club find themselves languishing towards the bottom of the table this term, Spedding has continued to flourish, and his club form earned him a maiden international call-up in November. 

 

The 28-year-old made his France debut in the 40-15 win over Fiji, and also featured in a 29-26 victory over Australia and 13-18 defeat to Argentina.
