Farrell's message which sparked England demolition job

SPOTLIGHT: Andy Farrell’s simple message to his team led to a dominant performance against pre-tournament favourites England, where they defeated Steve Borthwick’s men by 42-21 at Allianz Stadium in Round Three of the Six Nations.

After opening their campaign with a 14-36 defeat to France in Paris and an unconvincing performance in Round Two against Italy, concerns were raised about whether Ireland had hit their ceiling and was in decline.

The performance in London suggested that it is far from the case, with veterans Jamison Gibson-Park, Stuart McCloskey and Caelan Doris stepping up brilliantly in their respective roles.

Gibson-Park, who deservedly was named the player of the match, kept the intensity on attack, making two line breaks and taking a quick tap penalty to bust England open for the opening try, which set the tone.

McCloskey rolled back the years with a performance of the ages, making the second most carries (15) and third most tackles (14) behind teammates Tadgh Beirne (17) and Caelean Doris (20), which includes a crucial one on Marcus Smith in the 73rd minute.

Test rookie winger Robert Baloucoune was all over the place.

He scored Ireland’s second try, which left England with a mountain to climb after 27 minutes of play and followed up with the assist to Tommy O’Brien’s try moments later.

The Ulster wing made the joint-most linebreaks (3) alongside England’s Tommy Freeman, won the most turnovers (3) and made the most dominant tackles (4).

When asked about the performance, Farrell revealed the simple message he shared with his team ahead of the clash, which sparked a performance for the ages, and the team did not die wondering when they stepped onto the Twickenham turf.

“Honestly, I said it to the lads, I didn’t care whether we won or lost today, just whether we grew as a group because we know where we want to go,” said the head coach.

“It just so happens that to the people of Ireland, winning does matter, and it brings a bit of joy on everyone’s face.

“For them, I mean the crowd, the people that turned up, it was immense, and I hope everyone at home is just as proud as well.”

The result is a record win for Ireland over England in the Six Nations.

Farrell was asked where this ranks as an achievement during his time in charge of Ireland, he replied: “I don’t know, I suppose we’ll have a good think about that whilst we’re reminiscing later on this evening [Saturday].

“But it’s a special day, 100 percent, to come here [Allianz Stadium] and perform like that.

“We’d obviously be delighted with that. But even more so than that for us, I thought the respect that the lads show for one another out there on the field was immense.

“The respect that they show for the jersey and what it meant to them and the respect for the Irish people, really. To learn some lessons and grow as a group, as a team, was the overriding feeling for me.”

He added: “Honestly, it does [feel great]. We just had the Taoiseach [Prime Minister of Ireland, Micheál Martin] in the changing rooms there. We spoke as a group after that as well. It is special.

The one injury concern to emerge from the England game was winger James Lowe, who limped off with some damage to his left leg towards the end of the opening quarter.

Farrell commented: “Didn’t look too good, so it is what it is. But we said during the week, didn’t we, that the balance of the squad as far as the subs and all that, it actually worked out pretty nicely in the end.”
