Ireland lock in Farrell for the long haul
NEWS: Ireland have backed Andy Farrell to lead the national team into a new era after confirming a contract extension that will keep him in charge through to the 2031 Rugby World Cup.
The long-term commitment is a significant vote of confidence in the Englishman, who has transformed Ireland into one of the world’s leading rugby nations since taking over as head coach in 2020.
IRFU Performance Director David Humphreys described the extension as a crucial investment in Irish rugby’s future, highlighting the importance of continuity as the union looks to build on the success achieved under Farrell’s leadership.
“Andy’s contract extension is a key investment in the long-term success of the Ireland Men’s National Team through until the 2031 Rugby World Cup,” said Humphreys.
“Since taking the head coach position, Andy’s leadership has established a clear performance vision for the team, driven consistently high standards and built an environment where players and staff can thrive at the highest level of the international game.
“This commitment to Irish Rugby gives us real confidence as we look ahead and allows us to keep developing our playing group, strengthen our high-performance systems and ensure alignment from the pathway right through to the senior team.”
Farrell, who has overseen multiple Six Nations titles and guided Ireland to the top of the world rankings during his tenure, said the decision to extend his stay was driven largely by his belief in the next generation of Irish talent.
The Ireland coach pointed to the growing strength of the country’s development pathways and provincial structures as reasons for optimism.
“What excites me most is the increasing strength and investment in pathways and the quality of talent coming through,” Farrell said.
“There is a real confidence in the system that has been built across the provinces and age-grade programmes, and I believe with sustained effort that the best is yet to come.”
