Ireland lock's punishment for hit on Springbok revealed
NEWS: Ireland lock James Ryan had learned his fate for his dangerous hit on Springbok Malcolm Marx in their 13-24 loss to the world champions this past weekend in Dublin.
Ryan has been suspended for three weeks following his red card during his team’s Nations Series clash against South Africa.
The second-row forward was initially shown a yellow card by referee Matthew Carley in the 20th minute at Aviva Stadium, Dublin.
However, after review, the card was upgraded to a 20-minute red for a dangerous clean-out on Marx. Ryan’s indiscretion also led to Tadhg Beirne’s try being disallowed.
Nations Series organisers released a statement confirming the verdict.
“Ryan appeared before an independent Disciplinary Committee on Wednesday, facing a charge of foul play under Law 9.20a
“The committee, chaired by Wang Shao-ing (Singapore) with members Bogdan Zebega and Val Toma (both Romania), upheld the red card. Applying World Rugby’s sanctioning framework, they determined the mid-range entry point of six weeks/matches was appropriate.
“Taking into account Ryan’s acceptance of the red card, his previously clean disciplinary record, and other mitigating factors, the committee applied the maximum 50 percent reduction, bringing the final suspension to three weeks/matches.”
The lock’s ban means that he will miss Leinster’s United Rugby Championship match against Dragons and also the Irish giants’ Champions Cup fixtures against Harlequins and Leicester Tigers.
* Ryan has additionally been permitted to apply to take part in World Rugby’s Coaching Intervention Programme to substitute the final match of their sanction, which is aimed at modifying specific techniques and technical issues that contributed to the foul play.
The ban will cover the following fixtures:
November 28 – Dragons RFC v Leinster, United Rugby Championship
December 6 – Leinster v Harlequins, EPCR Champions Cup
December 12 – Leicester Tigers v Leinster, EPCR Champions Cup
