Ireland's Carbery eager to please Schmidt
The 21-year-old has been out of action since December with a damaged ankle, but is set to take to the park against Benetton Treviso in two weekends' time – the day after Ireland also visit Italy for their second Six Nations fixture.
And with rehabilitation from surgery still ongoing, Carbery will then be looking to face Edinburgh just five days later, hoping to return to Joe Schmidt's plans having been forced to sit out of the initial 40-man squad.
Yet with Paddy Jackson and Jonathan Sexton named as the only flyhalves for the opening clashes with Scotland and Italy, Carbery – who played in three of Ireland's four games this autumn – will be hoping to force his way back into contention for the business end of his maiden Six Nations.
"I'm nearly back," Carbery told the Irish Independent. "I'm back running and the strength has come back a lot.
"They've done a lot of tests comparing the two ankles and it's pretty much the same, so it's kind of working back into the team and getting the skills back.
"It's a bit disappointing [to miss out on the initial squad] because I love being in that environment.
"Hopefully when I get back fit and running, playing games, I might be involved but all I can do is concentrate on a big few weeks for Leinster coming up and see where that brings me.
"I'm fully back training next week, so I'll hopefully be involved in the Treviso game away and so hopefully we'll get the ball rolling from there."
