All about precision as Italy target upset against 'unpredictable' Boks
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Italy forward Federico Ruzza has urged his side to sharpen their focus and play with greater precision when they take on South Africa in Turin this Saturday.
The Azzurri are still riding the high of their emphatic 26-19 victory over the Wallabies last weekend – a result that marked only the second time in history that Italy have beaten Australia.
Trailing by seven points midway through the second half, Italy fought back when Louis Lynagh – son of World Cup winner Michael Lynagh – crossed for a converted try in the 58th minute to level the scores. Three minutes later, Melbourne-born Monty Ioane sealed the win with a decisive try.
The last time Italy defeated Australia was in Florence in 2022.
“The two victories against Australia in 2022 and 2025 are different but have something in common,” Ruzza said.
“The match in Florence was also a very solid one, where we led for much of the game.
“Last Saturday, however, the match was a bit more in contention, but we did well by staying united, focused, and showing the right attitude. We stayed in the game with precision and the desire to regain control of the match.”
The versatile forward admitted there’s still room for improvement.
“I think we can be a little more precise. We could have done better.”
This weekend, the Italians face a very different beast in the shape of South Africa.
The two teams met earlier this year, with the Springboks sealing back-to-back wins – 42-24 at Loftus Versfeld and 45-0 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
“We know South Africa’s strength, and we’ll need to be even more effective.
“I think overall it was a quality performance against Australia, but we can still do a little more to disrupt the opposition’s play. It’s always right to strive to improve and give more.”
Ruzza emphasised that South Africa’s unpredictability is what makes them so dangerous.
“I played against South Africa a few years ago. We’ll definitely need to take another step forward on Saturday.
“We know what kind of team South Africa is, and they always try to bring something different to every match.
“Everyone talks about their physical presence and consistency, but we mustn’t forget that they’re an unpredictable team.
“What will make the difference is the clarity with which we approach the various game situations.”
