Italy tour captain heads home

By Annemie Bester

NEWS: Italy has lost the services of their tour captain Giacomo Nicotera, who will head back home this week.

Italy arrived in Gqeberha on Sunday and has settled in as they get ready to prepare for the second Test against the Springboks this weekend.

According to Italy’s injury update, the hooker suffered a rib injury in training.

In his place the team management called up Zebre hooker Giampietro Ribaldi, who already joined the squad in South Africa.

Nicotera was the team’s skipper during last weekend’s 73-6 triumph over Namibia in Windhoek, but he was not in action against the Springboks at Loftus Versfeld last weekend.

Instead, lock Niccolo Dannone captained the Azzuri in their 24-42 loss.

The other two hookers in the squad are Tommaso Di Bartolomeo, who started against the Springboks, and Pablo Dimcheff who played off the bench.

Ribaldi was part of the Zebre team that narrowly lost to the Sharks (34-35) in the United Rugby Championship in March this year.
