Ongaro added to Italy squad

By Online Editors
Sunday 11 Mar 2012

Italy coach Jacques Brunel recalled hooker Fabio Ongaro to an enlarged 31-man squad on Sunday ahead of next Saturday’s Six Nations finale against Scotland.

Ongaro has been called up as a precaution in case first choice hooker Leonardo Ghiraldini does not recover from the shoulder injury that forced him off during Saturday’s 3-24 defeat to Wales in Cardiff.

Both Italy and Scotland, as so often before, have lost all four tournament matches so far and are playing each other to avoid the wooden spoon.

Italy have finished bottom of the Six Nations table nine times in 12 years since joining European rugby’s top table in 2000.

Italy squad:

Forwards: Fabio Staibano, Lorenzo Cittadini, Andrea Lo Cicero, Michele Rizzo, Martin Castrogiovanni, Tommaso D’Apice, Leonardo Ghiraldini, Fabio Ongaro, Quintin Geldenhuys, Cornelius Van Zyl, Marco Bortolami, Joshua Furno, Robert Barbieri, Manoa Vosawai, Francesco Minto, Simone Favaro, Sergio Parisse (captain), Alessandro Zanni.

Backs: Fabio Semenzato, Edoardo Gori, Kristopher Burton, Tobias Botes, Tommaso Benvenuti, Gonzalo Canale, Luca Morisi (Parma Crociati), Alberto Sgarbi, Giulio Toniolatti, Mirco Bergamasco, Roberto Quartaroli, Giovanbattista Venditti, Andrea Masi, Luke McLean.
