VIDEO: Bok Women get a seat at the 'big' table
The Springbok Women squad of 2025 have etched their names into the history books by becoming the first South African women’s team to qualify for the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals.
The Boks secured a thrilling 29-24 victory over Italy at York Community Stadium on Sunday – a result packed with significance.
Not only did it seal their place in the playoffs, but it also marked their first-ever win over Italy in four attempts.

“Where a lot of them [the players] come from, and the trials and tribulations they’ve faced – for our beautiful rainbow country, this was wonderful, and they deserve it,” said head coach Swys De Bruin.
“I’m so glad they did it for their country, and for all the girls in South Africa – many of whom don’t have father figures. These role models are making a big difference in their lives.”
When asked if this was the team’s greatest achievement, De Bruin was emphatic: “By far, by far, by far, by far.
“We’ve never beaten Italy before, and for that matter, we’ve never beaten a top-ten side. The result is just fantastic.
“We suddenly talk with the bigger boys now that we are in the quarters.
“I mean to come from 12th to make the quarters it’s a massive achievement.”
De Bruin was quick to credit his coaching team for their roles in the team’s success.
“I want to thank my coaches – scrum coach Laurian Johannes-Haupt, Franzel September with the line-outs, and Bafana Nhleko with the defence.
“I handle the team’s attack. You’re only as good as your coaches, and they were fantastic.”
Springbok No. 8 Aseza Hele left the field early with what appeared to be a minor leg niggle. However, De Bruin confirmed there was nothing to worry about, explaining her substitution was purely precautionary.
“She’s a valuable, brilliant player, so I immediately said, ‘Take her off.’”
The Springbok Women will face France in their final Pool D match next week in Northampton.
