History made: Bok star adds another milestone with captaincy in Japan
SPOTLIGHT: Springbok star Jesse Kriel will become the first foreign player to captain the Yokohama Canon Eagles.
Kriel will lead the club into the new Japan Rugby League One season.
It will be the double World Cup winner’s seventh season with the Eagles since joining from the Bulls five years ago.
It’s a significant achievement for the 31-year-old, who earlier this year became the 67th player to captain the Springboks, during a Test against Italy at Loftus Versfeld.
Kwagga Smith is another South African who has captained a Japanese club, the Blue Revs.

“It’s a huge honor to lead the Yokohama Canon Eagles,” Kriel said.
“This club has become a special part of my journey, and I’m incredibly proud to lead such a talented and hard-working group of players.”
Seito Furukawa will serve as vice-captain, while Yusuke Kajimura, Billy Harmon, and Amanaki Saumaki join the leadership group.
“There are many strong leaders in the squad who will play a key role in steering the team toward success.
“To our supporters, thank you for your passion and energy every single week. You’re a massive part of what makes this team so special.
“We feel your support in every moment, and it drives us to give our all on the field.
“I’m excited for what’s ahead this season, and I’ll do everything I can to lead with pride, commitment, and heart. Let’s make it a year to remember.”
The Eagles finished last season in the top half of the table.
