Springbok star Malcolm Marx set to leave Japan amid Bulls speculation
BREAKING: Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx is set to return to South Africa after the 2026/27 season, with speculation continuing to link the World Rugby Player of the Year with a move to the Bulls.
Marx’s Japanese club, Kubota Spears Funabashi Tokyo Bay, confirmed on Friday that the 32-year-old will leave when his contract expires in June 2027, bringing his six-year stay in Japan to an end.
While his next destination has not yet been announced, rumours of a move to Pretoria have gathered momentum, with an announcement potentially on the cards in the coming months.
The confirmation means Marx will remain with the Spears for one final season, where he will look to help the Japanese club challenge for the League One title before returning home.
The Springbok veteran has enjoyed a successful spell in Japan, with his outstanding performances earning him the prestigious World Rugby Men’s 15-a-Side Player of the Year award.
In a farewell message, Marx said the decision to return to South Africa was driven by family circumstances and thanked the club and its supporters for their backing during his time in Japan.
“My time with the Spears has been a memorable experience for both me and my family, one that we will always treasure,” Marx said.
“Although this chapter is coming to an end, my commitment to the Spears remains as strong as ever. I am fully focused on the upcoming season and will continue to give everything I have to the team, with the goal of finishing this journey on a high note.”
The 82-Test Springbok will now prepare for one final campaign in Japan before making his return to South African rugby.
For now, the Bulls links remain speculation, but Marx’s impending return will undoubtedly be significant news for South African rugby.
