The struggling League One club, with former All Black coaches Steve Hansen and Ian Foster in charge, announced the signing on Thursday.

Smith, 27, was a regular for the Stormers while Springbok Salmaan Moerat was injured earlier this season.

He will play lock for Verblitz, although he is more of a ‘utility’ in Cape Town.

“It has always been a dream of mine to play the sport I love in Japan and what a privilege it is to share my dream with the great club, Verblitz,” Smith said.

He said he was thankful for the opportunity to play under Hansen and Foster.

“I’m looking forward to learning from some of the best coaches in the world and sharing the field with my new teammates.”

Verblitz also announced the signing of Blair Ryall from the Southland Stags in New Zealand.
