On Thursday, Suntory Sungoliath announced that the Springbok star will be joining them from the 2023/2024 season.

Kolbe has dominated headlines this week with reports suggesting the Stormers offered the player a “mega deal” to join them.

However, on Wednesday, Western Province Rugby released a statement revealing that the Cape Town franchise made no formal offer to Kolbe or his representatives.

A WP Rugby spokesperson explained that these engagements did not progress beyond initial exploratory conversations.

Kolbe recently brought an end to his time at Toulon after producing a man-of-the-match performance in the recent Challenge Cup final against Glasgow Warriors before featuring in the club’s season-ending Top 14 encounter against Bordeaux at the end of May.

The Springbok wing joined Toulon ahead of the 2021-22 campaign and has now left the team with a year left on his contract.

“I’m so happy to confirm I will be joining Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath in the Japan Rugby League One competition after this year’s World Cup,” said Kolbe.

“This is going to be a new chapter and challenge in my career, and I’d like to thank everyone who made the move possible.

“Suntory is a team with an impressive history, and I am looking forward to making new memories with the team over the seasons ahead.

“To the fans, I hope to put in some performances that you can all enjoy. See you soon!”

Michael Yormark, who is president of Roc Nation Sports International – the agency that manages Kolbe, said it was undoubtedly a positive move for the player – as well as his family – at this stage of his life and career.

“Cheslin’s decision to join Suntory marks an incredible opportunity for him both personally and professionally.

“It is a testament to his dedication, talent, and relentless pursuit of excellence.

“We are confident that this move will not only elevate his game but also provide him with new experiences and an expanded global platform.”
