Leinster legend replaces Kolbe
TRANSFER NEWS: Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath have confirmed the signing of Ireland wing James Lowe on a two-year contract, with the former Leinster star replacing Springbok flyer Cheslin Kolbe.
Lowe joins the Japanese giants after bringing an illustrious spell at Leinster to an end following the 2025-26 season. Contract extension talks failed to produce an agreement, closing the curtain on a career in Dublin that yielded a record 71 tries.
The 34-year-old arrives in Japan with one of the most decorated CVs in world rugby. Since qualifying for Ireland through residency, he earned 45 Test caps, won two Six Nations titles – including a Grand Slam – and represented the nation at the 2023 World Cup.

The New Zealand-born winger also enjoyed remarkable success with Leinster, lifting the Champions Cup once and six United Rugby Championship titles, while earning two Test caps for the British and Irish Lions during last year’s series victory over Australia.
Lowe’s deal, which runs through to 2028, appears to end any realistic hopes of an Ireland recall for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Although Ireland head coach Andy Farrell has not completely ruled out a return, the Irish Rugby Football Union has not selected an overseas-based player since Johnny Sexton’s brief spell with Racing 92 in 2015.
Speaking after the announcement, Lowe said he and his family were eager to begin their new adventure.
“To everyone in the Suntory Sungoliath family, my family and I are incredibly excited to begin this new chapter of our lives in Japan. I have some very special memories from playing there.
“I have always admired the passion for rugby, the respect shown both on and off the field and the pride people take in representing their team. I am looking forward to learning more about Japan and its culture. It is a huge honour to join such a prestigious club.
“I will do everything I can to earn the trust of my team-mates, coaches and supporters. I want to bring energy, physicality and a positive attacking mindset to the team. I can’t wait to get stuck in. I can’t wait to meet you all. Yatte Minahare [Go for it].”
Lowe becomes Suntory’s marquee signing ahead of the new Japan Rugby League One season, filling the vacancy left by Kolbe, who has returned to the Stormers after three successful campaigns in Japan.
