Namibia revive World Cup hopes
REPORT: Namibia revived hopes of qualifying for the 2027 World Cup in Australia by trouncing the United Arab Emirates 86-29 in Kampala on Saturday.
The winners led 39-22 at half-time and pulled away in the second half of an Africa-Asia play-off at Namboole Stadium in the Ugandan capital.
Namibia lost to Zimbabwe in the African qualifying Final at the same venue last week and missed out on securing an automatic place at the global showpiece for an eighth consecutive time.
But the southwest African nation can still reach Australia if they win a mini-league, including Belgium, a South American team and the loser of a Pacific-South America play-off, from November 8-18 in Dubai.
“It is going to be difficult to beat us,” vowed Jacques Burger, Director of Rugby in Namibia and a former national team captain.
“Zimbabwe deserved to qualify for the World Cup, but now we have another shot at joining them in Australia.”
