Highlanders sign U20 All Blacks trio
The Highlanders have signed three members of the New Zealand Under-20 squad, with Dylan Pledger, Stanley Solomon and Josh Tengblad joining the Dunedin-based franchise.
All three featured at the World Rugby U20 Championship in Italy earlier this year.
Pledger, a halfback from King’s High School in Dunedin, made his NPC debut for Otago in 2023 and has continued to feature for the province this season.
“Growing up in Dunedin, the Highlanders have always been the team I aspired to play for. To now have the chance to be part of the squad is a dream come true.”
Lock Tengblad, from Sacred Heart College in Auckland, has represented the Highlanders U20 side for the past two years. Standing over two metres tall, he is regarded as a strong lineout option.
“I’ve loved being part of the U20s the past couple of years, and now I’m just really excited for the chance to step up, learn heaps, and contribute, in a fully professional environment over the next few seasons.”
Outside back Solomon played for New Zealand Schools in 2022 and the U20s in 2024 before making his NPC debut for Wellington later that year. He has nine provincial caps to his name.
“I am buzzing to join the Highlanders, and I can’t wait to rip in, earn respect and represent the South with pride. It’s time to get to work.”
Highlanders Head Coach Jamie Joseph said the trio had been monitored closely before being offered contracts.
“We’ve been watching Dylan, Josh and Stanley closely.”
“What they’ve achieved in their short rugby careers demonstrates they have the temperament and skill to take the next step in their professional careers. We’re excited to welcome them into the Highlanders environment.”
Pledger and Solomon are signed through to the 2026 and 2027 seasons, while Tengblad has committed until 2028. All three will link up with the Highlanders squad ahead of pre-season training later this year.
