McCaw breaks another world record
All Black captain Richie McCaw added another accolade to his unrivalled résumé in the 26-19 win over France at the Stade de France on Saturday.
McCaw, according to the International Rugby Board, became the most-capped captain in Test match history as he led New Zealand for the 85th time, breaking iconic Ireland centre Brian O’Driscoll's previous world record of 84 Tests as captain.
Legendary World Cup-winning Springbok hooker John Smit captained South Africa on 83 occasions.
McCaw, who led the All Blacks to their second World Cup title on home soil in 2011, is also the most successful skipper and player of all time, having won 75 of the 85 Tests he's played as captain and becoming the first player ever to win 100 Tests – when they beat the Springboks in Dunedin last year.
Saturday’s Test in Paris was the 32-year-old’s 122nd international and edged the three-time IRB Player of the Year a step closer to another major accolade, namely leading the All Blacks to a perfect season.
