Read wants Twickenham revenge

All Blacks No.8 Kieran Read is looking forward to taking care of some unfinished business at Twickenham next month.

New Zealand have lost just one game under coach Steve Hansen – against England at Twickenham last year – and Read admitted that his team is looking forward to the chance to put things right.

He told Fairfax media: "There's going to be something hanging over the England game. We do like those challenges. It's going to be in the back of the guys' minds. It was certainly a tough one to swallow last year, when we didn't play anywhere near as well as we could have."

Although they have come through the Rugby Championship unbeaten, Read insists the All Blacks will not make the mistake of underestimating England on their home turf.

"We always respect England for how they play, and Twickenham can be a daunting place," says Read. "We'll look forward to this game. It's the home of rugby up there and always a good occasion."

He added that Stuart Lancaster's team have the potential to rival the best in the world on their day.

"They are good when they get it right, and I think teams around the world have shown when they actually want to play some footy and really show their skills, then they're good enough. In test footy if a team raises its game and you're perhaps five per cent off, it evens up pretty quickly," he said.

If the All Blacks win all of their games on tour, it would be 14 wins this year without defeat, which has never been achieved in the professional era.

"We want to leave a real legacy with this team, and those are the things people talk about. We take great pride in our performance. When we play well we're happy in the changing shed afterwards, but maybe if we don't but still get a win there's certainly a different feeling," said Read.
