VIDEO: Hooker's approach to must-win Test
WATCH as Springbok rookie Ethan Hooker shares his approach heading into a must-win Rugby Championship match against the All Blacks.
Hooker earns his first Test start against the All Blacks at the Wellington Regional Stadium in what is a do-or-die clash for the Boks to stay in the running for the Rugby Championship and retain the Freedom Cup.
His inclusion shows a great deal of bravery by head coach Rassie Erasmus, who played rookies such as Aphiwe Dyantyi and Cheslin Kolbe in a famous 36-34 victory in 2018 over their arch-rivals at the same venue, with the duo scoring three tries between them in the upset result.
The 22-year-old utility back highlighted the importance of the match and shared his approach heading into what is the biggest Test of his young career thus far.
The article continues below…
“There’s definitely a bit of both in terms of excitement and nerves.
“The [Rugby] Championship is on the line, so it’s a must-win game.
“Excitement comes from being on the pitch and being able to represent your country.
“The nerves come from the whole stage and the fact that you’re playing [against] New Zealand.
“But again, you’ve got to get a good mixture of both and use it to your advantage.
“Don’t get too nervous or too excited, just keep a cool head going into the game”
