NEWS: Scotland lock Scott Cummings has escaped with a slap on the wrist for his dangerous croc roll on South African counterpart Franco Mostert.

Cummings appeared before a disciplinary committee, via video link, having received a 20-minute red card for an act of foul play – contrary to Law 9.20 (e) – in the match between Scotland and South Africa this past Sunday.

The 27-year-old second row forward was originally yellow-carded by referee Christophe Ridley for his early first-half croc roll clear-out on Mostert, but the TMO bunker upgraded this decision to a red card offence after reviewing it.

The disciplinary committee was chaired by Rhian Williams (Wales), joined by former international referee Donal Courtney (Ireland) and former international player Olly Kohn (Wales).

Cummings ‘accepted’ that his actions warranted a red card, but it was deemed to be on the ‘low end’ of the foul play spectrum.

“Applying World Rugby’s sanctioning provisions, the disciplinary committee determined that whilst reckless, the low-range entry point of two weeks was appropriate,” a statement read.

“With the full 50 percent mitigation applied, based on an exemplary disciplinary record, good conduct and having shown remorse, the sanction was reduced to one week.”

Cummings will miss Scotland’s encounter with Portugal this coming Saturday.

It is not the first time that Mostert was the victim of a dangerous croc roll this year.

Against Ireland, he also suffered a vicious clear-out and it was later confirmed that he had suffered a leg fracture that ruled him out of the Rugby Championship.

He only returned in time for the year-end tour.
