Biggest non-Springbok ever has died
NEWS: Toy Dannhauser, probably one of the biggest non-Springbok legends ever, has passed away, and the world will be poorer without him.
The 87-year-old Dannhauser passed away after battling cancer for some time.
He captained the Lions (Transvaal) in the 1960s during a time when they beat the travelling British & Irish Lions (1968) and Wallabies (1969).
Transvaal was the only provincial team that managed to beat the British & Irish Lions on their tour, thanks to their lock and captain Dannhauser, who kicked the final penalty for the win.
Dannhauser was a well-known figure in rugby circles, first as a player who represented Western Transvaal at fullback, and then moved to Transvaal, where he was a legend on the West Rand.
Here he started playing lock and represented Transvaal, Natal, and Northern Natal in that position.
He attended numerous Springbok trials and was often selected in rugby fans’ ‘unluckiest’ players never to get Springbok colours.
After his playing days, he stayed close to the game as selector, manager, and public speaker, and gained legendary status as a man of integrity and knowledge of the game.
He was a storyteller of note, humble, kind, and loved by all.
