Bok gets Quins job in coaching shake-up

NEWS: The Pretoria=based Harlequins appointed Springbok and World Cup winner Gary Botha as coach for 2026.

“This is a move that signals a decisive step toward the professionalisation of the club and a renewed focus on the role of club rugby in South Africa’s high-performance landscape,” a Quins statement said.

Botha’s appointment is one of the most significant club-level coaching appointments in recent years and a rare move in the South African game.

A former Springbok hooker with an international pedigree, he brings elite playing experience and global exposure back into the local club environment at a time when strong, professionally run clubs are increasingly recognised as critical to the sustainability and depth of the national game.

“The appointment forms part of Harlequins’ structured, long-term strategy to build a fully professional senior rugby programme.

“This five-year vision is focused on high-performance standards, clear player and coaching development pathways, world-class infrastructure, and the use of rugby as a vehicle for community cohesion and growth.”

Botha earned multiple test caps for South Africa and was part of the Springbok squad that won the World Cup in 2007.

He enjoyed a distinguished playing career with the Blue Bulls, where he won both Currie Cup and Super Rugby titles, and also gained valuable international experience through professional stints overseas, including with Harlequins in England’s Premiership.

Following his playing career, Botha remained involved at elite level, contributing to coaching and forwards development environments internationally.

As coach, Botha will assume responsibility for all first team operations at Harlequins, including performance strategy, player and coach development, and match-day execution.

Commenting on the appointment, Harlequins Chairman Gert Mulder said: “This is a defining appointment for Harlequins.

“Gary brings credibility, experience, and leadership at the highest level of the game.

“His appointment reflects our commitment to building something sustainable, competitive, and aligned with where South African rugby needs to be heading. We are delighted to welcome him to the Club and look forward to the journey ahead.”
